Second largest fort in Fujairah
Al Bithnah Fort is the second largest and most famous fort in Fujairah for its long history of wars and battles that took place in the region in the end of the 18th century and early 19th century.
The castle is located in the village of Al Bithnah, 13 kilometers west of the city of Fujairah between a mountain range on both sides of Haam Valley and overlooking agricultural green oasis. Built in the era of Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Sharqi in 1735, and has been a fortified defensive position and a very important repelling frontline from a strategic point.
Al Bithnah Fort played a major role in repelling the invasions of enemies and protect the city of Fujairah and its people from a lot of the attackers and invaders. The Fort consists of a main cone shaped building consisting three stories, in addition to another tower building, smaller than the first from the north. It can be accessed through a gate of no more than one meter in height, where the visitor enters the Fort and on to a spacious hall called by the locals as “The Fort Plate”.
The Fort Plate constitutes at the same time the base of the Fort and spreads above its eight holes in a circular motion covering all directions and are focal points for the defenders cannons and their guns, enabling them to observe all the directions with the help of the high altitude of the fort which reaches to around 20 meters above ground.
