Natural reserve for birds and insects in Sharjah
Wasit Wetland Centre is a conservation park, located in the northern Sharjah suburb of Wasit, running along the Sharjah/Ajman border. The centre comprises 86 hectares (210 acres) of protected habitat.
The centre, was established in 2015 by the ruler of Sharjah, Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, and is under control of Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) of Sharjah Government. The Wetland provides local fauna and migrant birds a safe place to reproduce. Around 350 species of birds are migratory visitors to the area, and some 60 species of birds are housed permanently.
In 2007, it was declared a “protected area” by the Emiri Decree No. (7) issued by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The rehabilitation work began in 2010 and was completed in 2015.
